Outer Beauty: Modeling
It seems every young girl wants to be a model, but few are prepared for what this career entails. Here's what you can do to see if modeling is right for you:
1. Training isn't necessary. Be wary of anyone that advertises a school, or says that spending money for training is a must. Along these same lines, if you really have the potential, you won't need to spend any money -- the agent will take care of pictures, etc. until you are up and running.
2. Find a good, reputable agent! I cannot say this strongly enough. Scams are everywhere...Ask to talk to some of their models and make sure there is actual work going on. WIth the internet, it is much easier to do research...check on any agency that expresses interest in you.
3. Don't have any false illusions. Just because you are "pretty" doesn't mean you should model. To really be successful, you have to photograph beautifully and have that special "something" that translates in the picture. At the same time, while most fashion models are over 5'9 and very slim, if you are shorter there are other types of modeling available to you.
4. Don't take rejection personally! The modeling business is full of rejection, so you do need to have a thick skin. : )
5. Get several agents opinions. If the first person says "no", see two more. If everyone is giving you the same or similar feedback, it may not be the right career for you. Also, what people want changes all the time....what look is in one year may not be the next!
6. When going to meet agents, call in advance and find out when they have "open calls". It's usually two days a week, for a couple hours at a time. If they do NOT have open calls, or if it's every day, consider that a warning!
7. Go on your interviews with little or no makeup, hair pulled back. Agents and clients really need to see what you look like -- they know the power of great makeup and styling.
Most of all...smile, enjoy yourself, and have fun! That's what it's all about anyway -- don't take yourself or your modeling career too seriously. : )
